Living in Athens, Georgia means long, beautiful summers — outdoor festivals, lake days, Saturday tailgates, and more sunshine than most of the country gets to enjoy. But all of that time in the Georgia sun comes at a cost. Over the years, UV exposure accumulates in the skin, showing up as dark spots, uneven tone, redness, fine lines, and a dull, weathered complexion.

The great news is that sun damage is one of the most treatable skin concerns we see at The Moore Center Med Spa — and BBL laser is one of the most powerful tools we have to address it.

Here is everything you need to know about sun damage and how our Sciton BBL laser treatment can help reverse it.

What is Sun Damage and Why Does It Happen?

Sun damage — also called photoaging — occurs when ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun penetrates the skin and causes changes at the cellular level. Over time, repeated UV exposure breaks down collagen and elastin, disrupts the production of melanin (the pigment that gives skin its color), and causes cumulative damage to the DNA of skin cells.

The result is what most of us start to notice in our thirties, forties, and beyond:

  • Brown spots and age spots
  • Freckles that darken and spread
  • Redness and visible blood vessels
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • A dull, tired-looking complexion

Here in Athens, where our summers are long and intense, many of our patients have accumulated significant sun damage by the time they come to see us — even those who were diligent about sunscreen. The good news is that BBL laser can address all of these concerns effectively and with minimal downtime.

What is BBL Laser?

BBL stands for BroadBand Light — a sophisticated light-based treatment delivered by our Sciton Joule laser system here at The Moore Center. BBL is not a traditional laser in the way most people think of lasers. Instead it uses broad-spectrum light energy delivered in precise wavelengths that target specific chromophores — or color-producing cells — in the skin.

For sun damage, BBL targets two primary concerns:

Pigmentation — The light energy is absorbed by melanin in brown spots, age spots, and freckles, breaking down the excess pigment so it can be naturally eliminated by the body. Over the weeks following treatment, dark spots darken temporarily and then flake away, revealing clearer, more even-toned skin underneath.

Redness and vascular concerns — BBL also targets hemoglobin in visible blood vessels and redness, reducing the appearance of broken capillaries, rosacea, and general facial redness.

Beyond addressing existing sun damage, BBL has been shown in clinical studies to actually reverse the signs of photoaging at the molecular level — turning back the clock on how your skin ages at a cellular level. Regular BBL treatments over time have been shown to make the skin behave younger than its chronological age.

What Areas Can BBL Treat?

BBL is incredibly versatile and can be used to treat sun damage on virtually any area of the body where UV exposure has caused visible changes. At The Moore Center, we most commonly treat:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Chest and décolletage
  • Hands
  • Arms and shoulders

Many of our Athens patients combine a face and neck treatment to address sun damage comprehensively across the areas most exposed to the Georgia sun.

What Does a BBL Treatment Feel Like?

Most patients describe BBL as feeling like a series of brief, warm snaps against the skin — similar to a rubber band flick. Our Sciton Joule system includes a cooling mechanism that helps keep the skin comfortable throughout the treatment, and most patients tolerate it very well.

A full face BBL treatment typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. There is no anesthesia required, and most patients return to their normal activities the same day.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

In the days following your BBL treatment you will notice that your brown spots and pigmentation appear slightly darker before they begin to fade. This is completely normal and expected — it means the treatment is working. The darkened spots will gradually flake away over the following one to two weeks, revealing clearer skin underneath.

Some patients experience mild redness or warmth in the treated area for a few hours after treatment — again, completely normal. Most people are comfortable returning to work and their daily routine immediately after their appointment.

You will want to be diligent about sun protection following your BBL treatment. We carry both chemical and mineral sunscreen options here at The Moore Center to fit every skin type, and we will make specific product recommendations at your appointment.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

For most patients addressing sun damage, we recommend a series of three BBL treatments spaced approximately 30 days apart for optimal results. Each treatment builds on the last, progressively clearing pigmentation and improving overall skin tone and texture.

After your initial series, many patients choose to do maintenance treatments once or twice a year to keep their skin clear and continue reversing the effects of ongoing sun exposure. Living in Athens means your skin is exposed to UV radiation year-round — a consistent BBL maintenance plan is one of the best investments you can make in the long-term health and appearance of your skin.

Can I Combine BBL with Other Treatments?

Absolutely — and many of our patients do. BBL pairs beautifully with several of our other treatments for enhanced results:

BBL + VI Peel — Combining BBL with our medical-grade VI Peel chemical peel addresses both the pigmentation and the surface texture of sun-damaged skin for a more comprehensive result.

BBL + Diamond Glow Facial — Adding a Diamond Glow facial before or after your BBL series helps prep and maintain your skin between treatments, keeping it hydrated and healthy.

BBL + Medical-Grade Skincare — We carry professional skincare lines including products specifically formulated to support your skin during and after BBL treatment. We will make specific recommendations based on your skin type and concerns at your consultation.

BBL + Sunscreen — This one is non-negotiable. Protecting your results with a daily SPF is essential — and we stock both chemical and mineral options to suit every preference and skin type.

Is BBL Right for Me?

BBL works best on patients with lighter skin tones and is most effective for treating brown pigmentation and redness. During your consultation at The Moore Center, we will evaluate your skin type, assess the extent of your sun damage, and determine whether BBL is the right treatment for your specific concerns.

We will also discuss your complete skin health picture — because treating sun damage is about more than just clearing spots. It is about establishing a long-term skincare routine that protects your results and keeps your skin healthy and beautiful for years to come.
