What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast Augmentation Surgery involves adding additional volume to the current breasts. Implants are used to gain the desired size and shape. The implants are either filled with saline (salt water) or silicone. The latest generation of silicone implants, the highly cohesive gel, has less wrinkling and allows us to consider placement of the implant above the muscle in a higher percentage of patients. This makes recovery less painful and return to normal activities quicker.
It is important to remember when considering breast augmentation, or enhancement, that the breasts should be considered “sisters” and not “twins”. Breasts are not the same size or shape prior to surgery. The goal of the surgery is to improve the size and shape instead of attempting to achieve perfection.
The Breast Augmentation Consultation
A thorough discussion of yourdesires and anticipated outcomes is the first step in the consultation process. Each breast can vary in shape from completely round to more of a teardrop shape with the placement varying from patient to patient. An examination of the breasts to evaluate symmetry, balance and skin quality follows. After a review of your medical history and medications a specific plan is devised. This plan includes the most appropriate surgical option, costs involved, etc.
